It might be a short month, but we’re certainly not short of calendar-filling events for Miami Young Republicans! Here are just a few things you’ll find on the all-new and recently re-launched www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com.

Thursday, February 18 Miami Young Republicans hosts a happy hour at a primo hang-out joint --- Mr. Moe’s in Coconut Grove. Mr. Moe’s is located at 3131 Commodore Plaza. We’ll be there beginning at 6:30 pm. No speakers, no agenda, just chatting and catching up. Mr. Moe’s offers 2 for 1 appetizers till 8:00!

Tuesday, February 23 is our next monthly meeting. Our new home is the Sports Exchange, located at 45 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. We begin with a social hour at 6:30, and the meeting itself begins around 7:30. Guest speakers so far include: Dr. Marion Thorpe, Jr., State Rep. Esteban “Steve” Bovo, Michael Bileca for state representative and Miriam “Mimi” Planas for county council. We’ll be discussing opportunities to get involved with the club. We’ll also give a report from the most recent FFYR Quarterly, which included remarks by Senator George Lemieux, Gov. Charlie Crist, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp and former speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio.

County Commissioner Javier Souto is running for re-election and will be at a fundraising event on Wednesday, February 24 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at T.Y. Lin International, 201 Alhambra Circle, Suite 900 in Coral Gables. Also in attendance will be State Rep. Erik Fresen, State Rep. J.C. Planas, and Commissioner Joe Martinez. Several local campaigns are out there every weekend looking for support. State Representative Anitere Flores is running for state senate and walks district 38 nearly every weekend. Public school teacher Corey Poitier is working hard to win the U.S. House seat currently held by Kendrick Meek, and his campaign’s eager to get volunteers, especially around North Miami Beach. Come to the February 23 meeting to learn more.

Lastly, there’s a special upcoming event which is hopefully the first of many joint events with our cousins in the Broward YRs and Palm Beach YRs. On Feb. 27 we’re all joining Robert Lowry, candidate for U.S. House, for a day of socializing at sea! The event will be $10 for paid members, $15 for non-members and guests. Of course, if you’d like to become a member before the event, there’s a form on www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com. Event details to come, watch http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=299282390757&ref=ts for information.

February News

Thanks to all who came out to our January Miami YRs meeting at the Sports Exchange. Those who couldn't make it missed several candidates: State Rep Julio Robaina (for state senate), Councilwoman Carla Ascencio-Savola (for state rep), Carlos Trujillo (for state rep), Juan D'Arce (for state rep), Tony Japour (for state rep) and Javier Baños (for South Miami city commission). Javier Baños's election is right around the corner, and he's looking for volunteers to help with campaign events around early voting this Saturday at City Hall.

This upcoming weekend, February 5-6, the Florida Federation of Young Republicans has its 7th Annual Reagan Day and Winter Convention in Orlando. The first night is mostly regional meetings and socializing. Saturday the 6th will feature Senator George Lemieux, Governor Charlie Crist, Lt. Governor Jeff Kottkamp, former speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio and others. If you're interested in attending, visit www.ffyr.org for more information. If you do register, please do so as being associated with the Biscayne Bay Young Republicans, that is our organization's official name and has been since its founding in 1981. Miami Young Republicans is just easier to remember.

Our next executive board meeting is Tuesday, February 9 at 7:00 pm. While all our e-board meetings are open, you may especially be interested in this next meeting because it's our "Get Involved" meeting. If you're interested in one of our open board positions, or would like to help with planning events or supporting campaigns, or even just want to see what goes into planning events like our record January meeting, please be at Soyka's Restaurant Cafe & Bar, which is located at 5556 Ne 4th Ct in Miami. Feel free to call with any questions.

Our next social event will be a happy hour in the Brickell area after work on Thursday, February 18. Location is TBD. If you're interested, watch our Facebook group or our website for details.

Our next general meeting will be Tuesday, February 23 at the Sports Exchange on Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. Featured speakers will include State Representative Erik Fresen and US Senate candidate Dr. Marion Thorpe. Other speakers may be announced shortly.

I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!

More January News

The Miami Young Republicans continues to provide opportunities to get involved. Here are just a few things you’ll find on the regularly updated calendar at www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com.

South Florida Conservative’s Freedom Forum will be Saturday, January 23at 5:00 pm at the Doubletree Airport Miami (711 NW 72nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33126). The guest speakers will include U.S. Senate candidate Marco Rubio and U.S. House candidates Robert Lowry and Corey Poitier, among others.

Marcos Sendon is the creator and editor of www.sflaconservative.com and a friend of the Miami YRs.   He tells us that tickets are $35, but anyone buys a ticket now for this week’s event and mentions Miami YRs can bring a companion to the event for free! Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or visit http://www.sflaconservative.com/freedom-forum-advanced-ticket/ for more information.

Our next regular meeting is Tuesday, January 26 at The Sports Exchange, which is located at 45 Miracle Mile, Coral Gables, FL 33134. You may want to park in the garage one block north of Miracle Mile / Coral Way. We will have several guest speakers including:

  • State Representative Julio Robaina, candidate for state senate
  • Councilwoman Carla Ascencio-Savola, candidate for state house
  • Juan F. D'Arce, candidate for state house
  • Javier Banos, candidate for South Miami city commission

Javier’s election is of particular interest, as his special election is Tuesday, February 9. The Miami Young Republicans have endorsed him (as well as Alec J. Rosen, who’s running for another South Miami seat), so here’s a way to get involved immediately. These local elections are a great way to make a real difference.

The Florida Federation of Young Republicans Quarterly Meeting is February 5-6 in Orlando, Florida.   These events are a great way to meet conservatives from around the state as well as learn about campaigning and hearing major speakers. In the past year guests have included Joe Scarborough, former Sen. George Allen, Rita Cosby, Governor Charlie Crist and former state speaker of the house Marco Rubio, among others. If you’re interested in attending come to Tuesday’s meeting for more information.

Hope to see you soon!

President, Miami Young Republicans
