January News

What a difference a year makes! 2009 began with news media declaring We Are All Socialists Now, and "every" young person was said to be enamored with Obama as he rode into DC on a sparkly unicorn. Well, a year of policies ranging from the downright silly (beer summit, anyone?) to positively destructive (cap-and-tax, socializing medicine, taking months to respond to answer military requests…), and the year ends with plummeting poll numbers for the learning-on-the-job administration… and more importantly a renewed sense of vigor and purpose among Young Republicans. Miami Young Republicans enters 2010 with a full head of steam. Our holiday party had around 40 guests, and our Facebook group is larger than ever.

As usual, tons of ways to get involved. Here are some things you’ll find on our calendar (www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com).

The James Madison Institute presents Florida's 2010 Kickoff for Liberty at the Yardhouse in the Village of Merrick Park shops at 320 San Lorenzo Avenue in Coral Gables. The event will be on Wednesday, January 6 from 5:30-7:30 PM. The event will feature Deputy Majority Leader of the Florida House Anitere Flores, former Representative Rene Garcia, and leaders from The James Madison Institute will deliver brief remarks. To RSVP contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call 850-386-3131 and mention Miami Young Republicans. The event is free.

SFlaConservative.com is hosting its first Freedom Forum on January 23 at the Doubletree Miami Mart. Guest speakers include former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, Robert Lowry (candidate for U.S. House District 10), and Lt. Col. Allen West (candidate for U.S. House District 22). The event is $35, and tickets are going fast. For more information, visit http://www.sflaconservative.com/upcoming-events/freedom-forum-1/.

Our January club meeting is Tuesday, January 26. Stay tuned for details on location and featured speakers. We'll also be announcing our next social shortly.

Last bit of news, watch for a completely revamped Miami Young Republicans website… www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com. In the meantime, the original site is still there as your avenue to our calendar, links to the Facebook and Twitter, etc.

December News

First the big news. It was officially announced at the last meeting, it’s been in the works for some time now. Beginning in 2010, the Biscayne Bay Young Republicans will be known as Miami Young Republicans. We’ll continue to celebrate the rich history of an organization that’s advanced local candidates and causes continuously since 1981, the new name will make it clearer for people who come to South Florida looking for ways to get involved.

The November meeting was another one of our largest events of the year, and we thank everybody who made it out. One of our guests was Robert “Bob” Lowry, candidate for U.S. House, who is looking for volunteers and people interested in getting involved --- check out his Web site at www.lowryforcongress.com for more information.  Also joining us was former Senator Bob Smith, www.friendsofsenatorbobsmith.com.
