Thanks to all who came out to last week's meeting of the Miami Young Republicans. Those who did got to meet U.S. House candidate Donna Milo, heard from some candidates for our July elections, and joined in a lively and informed discussion with representatives for and against Amendment 4 -- the Florida Hometown Democracy Amendment.
Here are just a few events that you'll find on our regularly updated calendar at www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com.
On Thursday, July 1 the Miami-Dade Teenage Republicans are having a dinner/fundraiser at the Los Ranchos located at 125 SW 107th Avenue.in Miami. This will be a special occasion as it is the installation of the board for this new club. We are happy to support this organization of the next generation of Young Republicans, and encourage everyone to support them. The event is just $25 if you contact them before June 30 at (786) 308-8080. The event begins at 6:00 pm, with dinner served promptly at 6:30 pm.
On the higher end of the scale, the Bill McCollum for Governor campaign is having a big fundraiser on Thursday, July 15 at the Miami City Club beginning at 7 pm. The suggested donation is $500, but if you have a different idea you can contact Mehras at (786) 472-1959 for details
Our featured event for July is going to be the Marlins-Nationals tailgate on Saturday, July 17. This will be a huge featured event for FFYR Region VIII, which is our club, the Broward County Young Republicans and the Palm Beach County Young Republicans. The game is the Marlins vs. the Washington Nationals, and first pitch is at 7:10 pm.
Come out before the game for a tailgate starting at 4:00 pm. We'll have several featured guests at our tailgate, including Marco Rubio and several other prominent candidates, to be named shortly. First off, congratulations to Kevin Cerino, Miami Young Republicans club chairman and past president. He was recently elected secretary of the Florida Federation of Young Republicans! Kevin will be part of the executive board of the statewide organization we are a member of, and at last Saturday's meeting in addition to the elections we also heard from several prominent statewide politicians including Bill McCollum, Jeff Kottkamp and Pam Bondi. There's a lot going on with the Miami Young Republicans. Here are just a few upcoming opportunities for you to get involved...
* Friday, June 18 at 5:30 pm is our next social. Join us for happy hour at La Palma, located at 116 Alhambra Circle in Coral Gables. Kick off the weekend in style at this lovely bar and restaurant with your fellow Young Republicans. If you plan to attend, check out http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=133900726621926&ref=ts and let us know you're coming! * Saturday, June 19 at 9:00 am Miami YRs member and state house candidate Juan D'Arce is having a breakfast meet-and-greet at Islas Canarias restaurant, which is located at 13697 SW 26 Street (Coral Way) in Miami. Check out his website, www.juan2010.com, for information.
* Tuesday, June 22 is our next general meeting. We start with a happy hour at 6:30 pm (2 for 1!), and the meeting itself at 7:30 pm. We have a great agenda for the meeting:
- A recap of the FFYR annual meeting
- A review of our club offices that will be up in the July election (and candidates can announce!)
- US House district 20 candidate Donna Milo
- A discussion featuring official representatives speaking FOR and AGAINST Amendment 4, the Florida Hometown Democracy Amendment. This may be the most hotly contested amendment on the ballot this Fall. One recent article said "Hometown Democracy's Amendment 4 is either Floridians' "final opportunity" to take control of the state's growth or a Trojan horse that would make matters worse." Which is it? Well, we hope you'll come and ask!
* Charlies "Charlie" Lopez is a member of our club and a candidate for state house district 118. He's hosting a special campaign event on July 4 at the Black Point Marina and Homestead Harris Field from 6pm - 8pm. Come help pass out campaign literature and stay for the fireworks. The park is located at 1034 NE Eighth St., Homestead, FL 33033 (US1 & 312 Street). |

Please join us for the next meeting of the Miami Young Republicans on Tuesday, May 25 at the Sports Exchange, which is located at 45 Miracle Mile in Coral Gables. As usual we'll start with the social hour at 6:30 pm and the meeting itself at 7:30 pm. This meeting promises to be a dynamic one --- our two guests will be State Representatives J.C. Planas and Esteban "Steve" Bovo. They will be sharing behind the scenes insights from the 2010 state legislative session --- discussing the bills, the successes, the challenges, and what the media may have missed! You're invited to chat with the representatives and enjoy unparalleled access to them. Many other city, county, and state candidates are expected to attend as well. Find out about how you can get involved in campaigns and help the Young Republicans make a difference!
Another upcoming event you might find of interest --- Friday, May 28 former first lady Laura Bush and her daughter Jenna Bush Hager will be at the Books & Books in Coral Gables signing copies of the new book Spoken from the Heart. Tickets are required for the event. For more information, visit http://www.booksandbooks.com/LauraJenna_Bush. The Florida Federation of Young Republicans (of which we are a member organization) has our annual convention June 11-12 in Melbourne, FL at the Crowne Plaza Oceanfront Resort. Friday the 11th is mainly registration, some board meetings and socializing, the crux of the meeting will be Saturday the 12th. The most recent meeting featured Marco Rubio, Senator George Lemieux, Lt. Gov Jeff Kottkamp, speaker of the house designate Dean Cannon, and even some guy named Charlie Crist. This meeting is expected to have as many if not more high-level candidates. We're planning carpools up to the event, so please let us know at the meeting if you're interested in attending. Also, the meeting will feature FFYR elections --- our own club chairman Kevin Cerino is running for secretary! If you are interested in being one of our handful of DELEGATES, please contact me ASAP as we have a very limited number of positions. You don't have to be a delegate to attend, but if you do want a voice in those elections there's some paperwork we need to submit pretty shortly. Our Facebook group now has its 300th member... the 300th person to join was Juanky Robaina, a candidate for State Representative in district 117. Are you in the group? Go to FB and search Miami Young Republicans to join us, as it's the best way to stay up on events, Last bit of news --- please check out www.miamiyoungrepublicans.com --- especially the link to our club store, which includes a link to our online store featuring merchandise with the NEW Miami YRs logo (thanks to special projects & outreach director Sarah Gerber for the great work here!) Hope to see you all Tuesday night. We expect a lively discussion and standing room only for the meeting! |
